defining design – and designing design [symposium 1]

january 27 2009

design criticism, journalism, and and pedagogy is something that i’ve been interested in for awhile.  as a self-proclaimed voracious reader of design blogs, i am constantly scrolling through all of my RSS feeds on google reader, which range from purely architecture, graphic inspirations, branding, fashion, experiential design, green, ‘world changing’, technology, etc.

by being exposed to all of this design from so many different channels [including in class, museum exhibits, etc.], i find that my design tastes are slowly morphing.  towards what, exactly, i am not sure…but i hope that i am  becoming a little more discerning, a little bit more critical.

how much does understanding of design contribute to how much i like something?

with the amount of ‘precedence’ that i am learning about, eva pointed out to me in studio, that i am continually paranoid about the originality of my designs and whether they have been ‘done before.’
